I've been using essential oils a lot lately - trying out different oils individually as well as experimenting with blends. For those of you who are also experimenting with oils regularly in your diffuser, here is an important note:
It is important to clean your essential oil diffuser after each use, especially if you are using it regularly on a daily basis or are blending different oils in the diffuser. If you continuously run your diffuser without cleaning it, its efficiency and longevity will be reduced and the therapeutic effects will not be experienced to the best of their abilities.
Don’t do what I did. I purchased my diffuser and did not read the instruction manual…
I used it regularly and continuously for months before I realized, oh crap, I need to maintain this thing if I want the oils to diffuse well. I had an oily residue build-up all around and over my diffuser base. Because I had waited so long, the cleaning process was long and difficult.
A poorly maintained diffuser can clog your diffusion mechanism which will render your diffuser pretty much useless. It can stop working or be inefficient, which sucks because you’ll be wasting your powerful oils and will probably have to purchase another diffuser.
To maintain your diffuser you want to empty it completely after each use and wipe it dry with a soft cloth. You can also use a drop of Lemon oil on a piece of soft cloth to help remove residue.
Remember to always look at the instruction manual that comes with your diffuser, as they are all made differently and maintenance procedures may vary for each.
Here is a general maintenance procedure that should be done at least once every month.
How To Clean Your Ultrasonic Diffuser
Step 1: Fill the diffuser base or water reservoir about halfway with water.
Step 2: Add 10 drops of pure white vinegar to the water.
Step 3: Turn on the diffuser for about 3- 5 minutes. This will help loosen up the residue.
Step 4: Drain the reservoir completely, making sure not to have water fall under the machine or into the motor area, as this can ruin it.
Step 5: Dip a cotton swab in white vinegar and wipe down the edges of the water reservoir as well as the ultrasonic mist chip. For this step, you can also use a drop of Lemon essential oil on a cotton swab to help remove sticky residue!
Step 6: Rinse the water reservoir with clean water.
Step 7: Wipe the reservoir with a dry soft cloth and let air dry before using it again.
How to Clean Your Nebulizing Diffuser
Step 1: Completely submerse the quick-change top in rubbing alcohol for 30–60 minutes.
Step 2: Wipe clean with a dry cloth.
