Top 5 Essential Oils for Beginners

April 16, 2018

Okay, so you’ve been seeing essential oils everywhere and are interested in getting started with them, but which ones should you start with anyway?

Getting started with essential oils can be a little bit overwhelming!

Over 90 different essential oils exist and they all have different effects on our bodies and moods. So how can you know which essential oils are best for you as a beginner to this therapeutic-oil world?

I was in that position when I first got started with essential oils and I must admit it was a lot to learn, but I enjoyed the process because it’s for my health and wellness. I am currently in the process of transitioning to a more holistic way of living, and so that means my medicine cabinet and household products will soon all be replaced with essential oils. Yay!

If you’ve been thinking about getting started with oils, I’ve created a list of the top 5 essential oils that I think are great for beginners. They’ve worked great for me so far and I hope they can do the same for you and your loved ones.

If you find this useful, please share with your friends and family and help them also get started with oils!

Here it goes.

1. Lavender

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil is a definite must have because of its calming, soothing and relaxing benefits. Who doesn’t need to relax? It’s helped me relax during anxious times and always gives an overall feeling of wellness. I love the way it smells. You really don’t need a lot of it for you to feel the emotional benefits. One drop is all it takes. You can use it so many ways too - like:

- Add a drop to your shampoo to help your hair look nice and thick and healthy.
- Add a drop to a skin irritation to soothe it.
- Ingest one drop to reduce anxiety and calm the nervous system.
- Diffuse to reduce anxiety and tense feelings.
- Diffuse to promote a goodnight's sleep.

This is a usual first grab for me when I’m asking myself how I’d like to feel. Usually calm. I’d usually like to feel chill.

2. Lemon

Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil is my second recommended beginner oil, for one big reason: it’s so versatile. You can use it aromatically, topically, internally AND for cleaning purposes. For instance you can:

- Diffuse one drop to help uplift your mood, energize you and get you mentally prepared for the day – perfect for diffusing in the morning!
- Add one drop to your skincare routine to give your complexion a healthy glow and for a nice refreshing feeling.
- Add two drops in a glass of water to make a glass of lemon water. It gives your water a refreshing taste and helps detoxify your digestive system with its natural cleansing properties. If ever you 're having indigestion, I recommend a glass of lemon essential oil water.
- Ingest two drops to help respiratory discomfort during seasonal allergies.

- Put a couple drops on your cleaning rag to help remove those stubborn stains and sticky residue. (Very good for cleaning your diffuser)
- Add a few drops to your cleaning spray bottle with water to clean counters, tables, and other home surfaces.

I love this one because the smell is so invigorating and really helps wake you up. For cleaning, its a must-have!

3. Peppermint

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) essential oil is third on my beginner must-have. It's one of doTERRA's best sellers because it is also so versatile. It's main benefits include relieving the occasional upset stomach, freshening breath, and promoting clear breathing. We use it mainly to help clear our respiratory airways and promote healthy, clear breathing. You can use it aromatically, topically, internally and for other purposes. Here are a few examples for peppermint oil use:

- Diffuse a few drops in your diffuser when you're feeling tired and drained. Peppermint is also invigorating and awakens your senses. It'll help you feel awake and energized, like lemon. Combine the two for a great uplifting blend!
- Massage two drops onto your neck and shoulders to relieve feelings of tension. I personally do this after those long dental hygiene days of repetitive cleaning when my shoulder and neck muscles feel strained. The cooling effect helps the muscles relax!
- Add a few drops to a cold compress and place it at the bottom of your feet when you feel overheated. It'll give a cooling effect to help you cool down.
- Ingest two drops when you have an upset stomach. It'll help soothe your digestive system.
- Add a few drops to a water spray bottle and spray it around your windows and doors to help keep bugs out naturally!

4. Malaleuca

Malaleuca (Tea Tree) essential oil has cleansing and rejuvenating properties that work wonders on our skin, hair and fingernails. It is also an uplifting oil that can be used to purify and freshen the air around you. Tea tree oil can be used aromatically, topically, internally and for cleaning. For instance:

- Diffuse two drops to help freshen the air in the room and purifying it naturally. Stop using your chemical-loaded products...They mostly all include neurotoxins. Neurotoxins are destructive and poisonous to your nervous system and tissues.

- Apply to achy muscles after your workout for a soothing effect.
- Combine tea tree oil with cedarwood and apply to your face after shaving – it gives you an invigorating sensation.

- Ingest two drops to support a healthy immune system and gastrointestinal health.

- Add five drops to a spray bottle with water and use to clean household surfaces.

You want to keep this oil for cleaning, purifying and cleansing your home and body.

5. Frankincense

Frankincense (Boswellia) essential oil is SO GOOD. It's been used for centuries due to its soothing and beautifying characteristics. It helps you maintain healthy cellular function, soothes your skin while reducing skin imperfections and inflammation. It has a rejuvenating effect when applied to your skin and promotes feelings of relaxation. This is my go-to essential oil for meditation. When I diffuse this oil, I receive an overall feeling of wellness, happiness and relaxation. If you need help focusing when meditating, I recommend diffusing Frankincense and Lavender together! Here are a few ways you can use Frankincense essential oil:

- Diffuse to encourage feelings of happiness, zen, wellness and peace.

- Apply a drop or two to your cuticles and nails to maintain healthy fingernails and toenails.

- Massage two drops into your hands and feet for a relaxing effect after a workout or strenuous activity.
- Add two drops in your moisturizer to reduces redness of blemishes and to rejuvenate your skin.

- Ingest two drops to support healthy cellular function of your immune and digestive systems!

LOVE this one. I highly recommend it.

So there it is. These are just the 5 essential oils I would recommend for starters. There are MANY more I can personally recommend for you, depending on your health needs and desires. If you want to get started but still have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me :)

Have fun!

- Catherine
